Ferris Bueller Super Bowl Commercial Generating Pre-Game Buzz

Matthew Broderick stars in a Honda commercial that is a reprise of his iconic role as Ferris Bueller in the 1980s.

Now that Super Bowl commercials often find their way to YouTube and the Internet weeks before they air during the big game, marketers get an opportunity to gauge the public reaction to their efforts. For Honda, the company's commercial for Super Bowl XLVI is already generating big buzz among Internet viewers, even those who may not be too familiar with the inspiration for the commercial, the 1980s classic film, Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The commercial follows the same story arc as the original film, but this time Matthew Broderick is playing himself. He wakes up on a beautiful day and decides that he's simply not going to be able to work - so he calls his boss, makes up an excuse and heads out for a day of adventure and fun. The original movie perfectly captured the romantic notion of blowing off your mundane obligations in order to enjoy some real fun. And the rebellious aspect of intentionally shirking your responsibilities made it that much more appealing to young audiences, in particular.

The 60-second Honda commercial follows many of the story points of the 1980s film, so those that have seen it will have plenty of opportunities to reminisce about the original movie. Broderick, although 30 years older than when he originally played Ferris, pulls off the commercial very well. After all, even decades later, Broderick is - and will forever be known as - Ferris Bueller.

And even though Honda seems to have struck gold with this advertising angle, it's likely that Matthew Broderick and the original Ferris Bueller's Day Off movie will be talked about much more than the car company.
